Fasting for Spiritual Growth

Fasting has been a part of spiritual traditions for thousands of years. The idea is that through denying your body food you can come closer to God. Many people report feelings of euphoria in long fasts. Jesus fasted in the New Testament and it is common in Eastern yogis.

I decided to try a five day fast recently. I had no food but did allow myself water and one coffee in the morning. I also had the occasional cup of tea. The first day was easy and I could carry on my normal routine. By the second day I was lacking energy and I had to have an afternoon nap. The third day was much the same. I started to feel quite unreal and felt as if I had an illness. I had to move slowly whatever I did. On the fourth day I was much the same. I decided I couldn’t stand it any more and I broke my fast that evening. I had a tin of vegetable soup as it was easy to digest. This was the longest fast I have ever done.

Fasting has lots of benefits for your body. One of the most important things is autophagy. This is where the body repairs itself and clears out lots of old junk it doesn’t need. It’s like a health reset. It can also be good for weight loss. I lost three kilos during the fast but then I gained a kilo when I started eating again. During a fast your body loses the fuel it normally uses due to lack of food so it starts eating fat. It’s particularly good for losing the visceral fat around your abdomen. I did lessen the pain in my jaw which has been bothering me for some years. My level of inflammation went down.

I was disappointed that I didn’t feel more spiritual during my fast but I think I would have to fast for a longer period to have this experience.

I have decided to try intermittent fasting now that I’m back to eating again. I will fast for sixteen hours and then eat within an eight hour window. This means I can have lunch at twelve and dinner before eight in the evening.

I might try another long fast another time.
